Targeted Immigrants

Despite shifting headlines, immigration enforcement isn’t slowing down, it’s ramping up, quietly but forcefully. Across the U.S., we’re seeing vulnerable communities pulled into detention systems under broader and often unexpected pretenses. Knowing who’s being targeted is key to staying safe, prepared, and empowered.

Here’s what we, and many other immigration attorneys nationwide, are witnessing right now. If you see yourself in any of these groups, don’t wait. Reach out. Get informed. You shouldn’t have to live in the shadows.

1. Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim Immigrants
Increased scrutiny and political targeting are on the rise. Even lawful residents and citizens are being flagged for activism. The case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian-American detained despite a judge's ruling, shows how quickly advocacy can turn you into an enemy under immigration enforcement.

2. Undocumented Immigrants with Minor or No Criminal History
ICE continues to detain individuals for low-level issues, like traffic stops or workplace raids, but what’s more troubling is a newer tactic we’re seeing. People are showing up for their court-ordered immigration hearings, only to have their cases dismissed without warning. In that moment, ICE steps in and takes them into custody. It feels like a setup, and it’s disproportionately affecting those who’ve entered the U.S. within the last two to three years.

Despite public claims of focusing on “serious offenders,” many of these arrests happen through coordinated sweeps with local law enforcement, even in cities that claim to be sanctuaries.

3. DACA Recipients and TPS Holders
Temporary status is no longer a shield. We’re seeing a disturbing disregard for protections that were once well-recognized under immigration law. It feels like the focus has shifted, from understanding individual stories to simply hitting enforcement numbers. Humanity is being stripped away, and people are being reduced to case statistics.

A missed renewal, a minor misstep from years ago, or even an honest administrative error any of these are now being used as justification for detention of previously protected individuals. These cases make it painfully clear: the line between protection and vulnerability has never been thinner.

The enforcement net is widening, and it’s catching people who never thought they’d be at risk. If you or someone you care about fits into any of these patterns, don’t wait for a knock at the door. Act now. Quietly, carefully, but decisively.

Talk to an immigration attorney. Secure your important documents. Let trusted people know your plan. You don’t have to do this alone, but you do have to start. Today.
